Some mammals such as dogs and cats can become infected but usually do not shed cysts in their feces. The active stage, trophozoite, is present only in the host and in fresh feces. Cysts on the other hand survive outside the host in longer. When swallowed they excyst into the infective trophozoite in the gastrointestinal tract.
